The Indigenous Seed Bank Project focuses on preserving the traditional agricultural heritage of the Konkan region, particularly in Ratnagiri District. The main objective is to conserve local and indigenous rice varieties, which are well adapted to the specific environmental conditions of this area and have been cultivated for generations. These native varieties are often more resilient to local pests, diseases, and changing climatic conditions compared to hybrid varieties.
In this project, seeds of these traditional crops are collected, preserved, and distributed to interested farmers who wish to cultivate them on their land. By doing so, the project aims to promote the growth of indigenous crops, ensuring that they continue to be a part of the local farming system. This not only helps in biodiversity conservation but also provides farmers with an opportunity to grow healthier and more sustainable crops.
Additionally, the project is being carried out in collaboration with Srushtidnyan, an organization dedicated to environmental education and conservation. By partnering with Srushtidnyan, the project benefits from shared expertise and resources, making it more effective in promoting traditional farming practices. This initiative also fosters community participation, as farmers are actively engaged in the conservation and use of these seeds, helping them become champions of sustainable agriculture in the region.
